Caribbean Festival

Three weeks of theater, dance film and workshops with a Caribbean flavor, as well as eight reggae, calypso and jazz concerts begin February 20th at Playa Chiquita Lodge, six kilometers south of Puerto Viejo in the province of Limón.  The Sixth Music and Arts Festival will begin with a drum-making workshop, an accompaniment by the Puerto Viejo group Sabor y Más, and a calypso concert.  The following weeks will feature workshops on drumming, Afro-Caribbean dance and culture, bands and soloists from the Caribbean coast, San José and abroad, and such performances as a dance by Metamorphosis called "The Secret of the Star".  Workshops will take place on the beach in front of the Salsa Brava restaurant in Puerto Viejo and are conducted by locals and others from around the country.  The prices vary according to the instructors of the drum-making workshop; for example, it includes all the materials for a drum and costs between $150 and $250, depending on the size.
